Episode #3 - Okiolabs Document Cameras
TRANSCRIPT (full transcript link)
Hello and welcome to episode number three of the one-five. I am your podcast hostess - Tricia Louis - the self-designated tech goddess and I will be coming to you weekly in this audio podcast format with great edtech tools, tips, and tricks.
In this week’s episode, I will be sharing about Okiolabs. What is Okiolabs? Well, Okiolabs is a company that makes amazing doc cams and now webcams. I learned about them back in November of 2020 on Twitter. One of the first products they put out was the Okiocam S. The Okiocam S is a great little document camera. Super small footprint and you can use it practically anywhere. Another key point about okiocams is their price point. If you are looking for an in-expensive but GOOD doc cam you can’t go wrong with the S cam that is priced currently at $60.
Over the past couple years they have made other models like the T Plus. That model webcam comes with a built-in dry erase board. The neat thing about this dry erase board is that it has a matte finish so it does not create that typical whiteboard glare you get. That doc cam is currently priced at $80.
And just recently (September of 2022), they introduced the S2 and S2 Pro line of doc cams. These doc cams also have an onboard microphone so it can be used as a webcam as well! The S2 kicks it up a few notches with a 12 MegaPixel camera and a built-in LED light. I am currently using - and loving - the S2 Pro model right now. The S2 Pro is their highest priced doc cam but even at $120 it is priced far less than other comparable document cameras.
The most amazing thing about okiocams is that you can use them with a chrome extension - no pesky installations are required. So, that makes the doc cam usable on pc, mac, or chromebook. They get all their power from the USB input so no need for a separate plug-in either. So you could even have these available for student use as well. FYI - they do have a variety of different software to download including time-lapse, stop motion, and snapshot/recorder apps.
Okiolabs also introduced a line of webcams. I have not personally used that product, but after using the different doc cams over the years, I would bet that it is a great product.
One last word about Okiolabs, they make a google slides add-on as well - it makes it super easy to have your doc cam connected and to insert a still image right into a google slide OR as an added bonus you can just have the live image of the doc cam up right inside your google slides window!
